MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A grassroots movement aimed at legalizing medical marijuana in Florida hopes to have enough signatures to get the issue on the November ballot, say organizers.
Supporters of United For Care must receive 900,000 signatures by February for the issue to make it.
Dr. David Popkin, a chiropractor in Plantation, has petitions inside his office. He said a breast cancer survivor who used medical marijuana asked if she could leave them for other patients to sign.
"She suffered tremendously for weeks and months, and she goes, 'They couldn't even help me and finally one of the doctors gave me medical marijuana for my pain,' and that is the only thing that helped her."
Last week, Colorado became the first state to legalize the use of recreational marijuana.
