Philip Levine sworn in as Miami Beach mayor

Newly elected mayor says he'll focus on flooding, convention center

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Newly elected Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine was sworn in Monday morning.

Levine defeated Michael Gongora in a recount.

"It was a long journey and I'm glad it came to a positive end, and I think it's obviously a new start and it's a new day for the city of Miami Beach," he said.

Levine told supporters he'd focus on finding solutions to the city's flooding problem and renovating the convention center.

Along with Levine, three other political newcomers joined the commission.

"I think one of the positive things is none of us have any experience," he said. "I think that's the greatest thing we can bring because we will bring fresh ideas."
