Clinton calls Officer Maikel Rodriguez to wish him well

PINECREST, Fla. – A Pinecrest police officer is recovering from broken bones and road rash after he crashed his motorcycle Tuesday while escorting Hillary Clinton’s motorcade on the Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade County.

The crash was reported in the westbound lanes of the highway near Northwest 67th Avenue.

Sky 10 was above the scene shortly after 4:15 p.m. and saw a helicopter landing on the highway. The officer was seen being transferred from a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue truck to the helicopter, which took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

Pinecrest police identified the officer Wednesday as Maikel Rodriguez, who has been with the Police Department for more than 10 years.

Police said Rodriguez has been a motorman for four years.

"His Pinecrest family wishes him a speedy recovery," police posted on social media.

Police said Rodriguez is in good spirits and received a call from the Democratic presidential nominee wishing him well.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

Traffic investigators are trying to determine what caused Rodriguez to crash.
