PLANTATION, Fla. – The Hyatt family's Plantation home seems to have it all for the holidays: an appearance by Santa Claus, a live miniature pony, billowing snow and hundreds of thousands of lights.
The ultra-festive, decked-out house has not only graced the pages of glossy magazines, but also on Monday, it was showcased on ABC's "The Great Christmas Light Fight."
At the end of the first hour of the show, though, the family lost out to another family of extreme decorators in Decatur, Georgia. The Hyatts said they felt like winners anyway.
"With the TV show, it was just more of a challenge -- a little bit more fun," said homeowner Mark Hyatt.
"It's exciting and humbling all at the same time. We're awfully proud to represent the state of Florida," said Kathy Hyatt.
As the Hyatt's popularity has grown, so has the controversy over the attention it's getting.
Last year, neighbors who live on the same cul-de-sac told Local 10 the lights and traffic were chaotic, not magical.
This year, for the first time, Plantation police officers are working overtime to shut down the Hyatt's cul-de-sac and a section of Old Hiatus Road to traffic.
The home is located at 11201 N.W. 14 Street, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 33323.
No cars will be allowed from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. each night until the display is taken down on Dec. 29.
Mark said he takes it all in stride.
"There will always be detractors in anything that you do, so I would say someday, maybe someday, they'll embrace it and we can all do this together," Mark said.
