Play it safe while shopping this holiday season

Many shoppers are focused on some big sales this holiday season. Police say safety sometimes takes a back seat. It's why police departments across South Florida say crooks love the holiday season as well, targeting unsuspecting shoppers, or any number of unattended cars in a parking lot.

Local 10 went through a lot on Thanksgiving night where shoppers were out in full force and found several cars unlocked, or packages and bags that were out in plain sight.

Officials say there are several things you need to do to send criminals home upset and empty-handed:

  • Don't leave packages visible in your car windows
  • Carry your purse close to you/ or your walletĀ  in your front pockets
  • Have your keys in your hand
  • Plan ahead by taking a friend or family member out with you.
