2 killed outside home in Miami Gardens triple shooting

Car with bullet holes towed from scene

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Two people have died after a triple shooting in Miami Gardens early Tuesday, authorities said.

Miami Gardens police spokeswoman Petula Burks said the shooting was reported about 12:15 a.m. outside a home along Northwest 24th Court and Northwest 168th Street.

Officers discovered the victims, Jemmelle Raymond, 16, and Dre'quan Burnett, 18, suffering from gunshot wounds inside a black Volkswagen.

Raymond was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Burnett was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died.

A third person inside the car was also shot and is in stable condition. The victim's identity has not been released.

Raymond's body was still in the car when it was towed away from the scene shortly before 5:30 a.m. The back windshield was hit by at least 10 bullets.

Some neighbors told Local 10 News that they have lived in the area for more than 40 years and have never seen a shooting happen.

"We never had this kind of foolishness around here," Inez Harris said.

"Never. This used to be a nice, quiet neighborhood," Elmer Hollis added.

Harris said the bullets pierced her fence before striking the vehicle that was parked outside the home of Raymond's grandmother.

"They're in there trying to keep her calm and stuff like that," the woman's cousin, Gary Jones, said.

Jones said his cousin also lost another grandchild to gun violence just weeks ago.

"My reply doesn't change. If you saw something, say something," Rev. Eric Readon from New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church said. "It's raining in their backyard, today, but it could be raining in your backyard, tomorrow."

Police are still searching for the shooter.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
