Police ID victim in school crash

Catalina Gomez Peláez killed in crash outside Our Lady of Lourdes Parish School

MIAMI – Students returned to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish School the day after a crash killed a 27-year-old woman outside the cafeteria.

Nuris Better, 73, lost control of her sport utility vehicle Tuesday afternoon, Miami-Dade police say. She hit and pinned Catalina Gomez Peláez against the building, killing her.

Family members said she moved to the U.S. from Colombia six months ago and was picking up her two younger siblings from the school.

"It's sad. I'm speechless," said parent Zumaya Alonso. "It could've happened to me. It could've happened to me and my kids and I could've been outside with my kids."

"Nobody knows what to say about it, how to feel. It could've been anybody," added parent Lily Pavon.

"I kept thinking -- it could've been my wife," said Pablo Bauza, another parent. "It could've been someone I knew. I don't know how you prevent that."

Better didn't answer her door Wednesday. Neighbors said she has been shaken up since her husband died.

No charges have been filed.
