Police see Rasheed Smith jump in canal while investigating car burglaries

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man who died after apparently jumping into a canal Thursday in northwest Miami-Dade was identified Friday as Rasheed Smith, 29, of Hialeah.

It's unclear why Smith jumped into the canal, but Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said officers were investigating vehicle burglaries in the area when an officer saw a man run across Honey Hill Drive near Southwest 49th Street.

When police arrived, they saw a man, believed to be Smith, running before he jumped into the canal, which divides Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Rues said officers saw the man in the canal and tried to help him, but he went underwater.

Davie Fire Rescue divers retrieved the body.

It's not yet clear whether Smith was involved in the vehicle burglaries that were reported in the Vizcaya neighborhood.
