Miami police investigate a fatal crash involving a "smart car" that shut down Biscayne Boulevard Wednesday morning.
Witnesses saw the driver of the Car2Go, identified by Miami police as 22-year-old Mila Anjelika Dago, run the red on Biscayne Boulevard and broadside a Chevy Silverado crossing the intersection at NE 15th Street.
Both drivers were critically hurt and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Unit.
The passenger in the Car2Go, 22-year-old Irina Reinoso, did not survive, according to police.
Police said Wednesday evening the driver of the Silverado, 49-year-old Benjamin Cohoon Byrum, was treated and released from the hospital. Dago remains hospitalized at this time.
The Car2Go reps referred questions about the rental to the Austin, Texas headquarters. From there Local 10 learned that any Car2Go driver must become a member first. They said applicants are rejected daily if their driving record is less than perfect, has any violation, points or suspensions.
Members sign off on a mandate not to abuse drugs, drink alcohol or take any medicines that impair driving. It's a zero tolerance, zero blood toxicity policy.
Police are hoping to speak to Dago to find out more about Wednesday morning's crash.
