OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – Three teenagers and a 12-year-old boy were shot Monday night in Opa-locka.
The shootings happened outside an apartment complex near Northwest 135th Street and Northwest 30th Avenue.
"Someone came up, opened fire and these are the four victims," Opa-locka assistant city manager David Chiverton told Local 10 News.
The victims, ages 16, 15, 14, and 12, are listed in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police said one of the victims drove himself to the hospital.
Relatives said the youngest and eldest child are cousins.
The youngest child, who has been released from the hospital, told Local 10 News reporter Glenna Milberg that he saw the gunman wearing a hoodie and saw a silver handgun.
"I just see someone running up and start shooting," said Reginald.
"People just came around the corner shooting at the little kids," said witness, Maine Davis.
Reginald, 12, was shot in the leg. He said his 16-year-old cousin, Bernard, is still in the hospital.
Reginald's mother said people need to find a different way to deal with their problems.
"Instead of being an adult and talking it out, they want to go get guns and they hurt people that don't even have nothing to do with their problems," said Tamika Knight.
Police said about 20 children were playing with fire crackers outside when the shooting occurred. One of the injured children ran to a nearby supermarket for help.
Police believe that at least one person in the crowd was targeted in the shooting, but do not believe that the four injured children were targeted.
A witness told police that the gunman got away in a dark four-door Chevrolet sedan.
