Man shot after officer 'felt in fear for his life,' police say

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – One man has been arrested after a fatal police-involved shooting took place Sunday morning in Hallandale Beach, police said.

The incident happened in the 100 block of Golden Isles Drive at about 4:20 a.m., shortly after residents reported seeing people peeping through car windows, Hallandale Beach police said.

Police arrived and saw two suspicious men in a car outside a home.

"When they attempted to make contact with the suspects, at some point, our officer felt in fear for his life and was forced to fire upon the suspect," Hallandale Beach police Maj. Sonia Quinones said.

Quinones said the driver, who was shot in the torso, crashed the car in front of 201 Golden Isles Drive. She said the passenger ran away before the crash but was later caught.

The wounded suspect, later identified as Michael Wilson Jr., 27, was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The passenger in the car, later identified as Tyler Shuman, 23, was arrested.

Several vehicles in the area were burglarized. Jonathan Belal was one of the victims. He said "money, credit cards and sunglasses" were stolen from his car.

Residents weren't allowed inside their homes while police searched for Shuman.

Police used a helicopter, boats and K-9s to search for Shuman. He was found hiding at 473 Golden Isles Drive and was arrested in front of relieved residents.

"We saw the guy get caught and that was the best feeling, to be able to go home," Sabina Dua said.

The officer who fired the fatal shot was identified as Corey Clark. He was hired by the Hallandale Beach Police Department in 2013.

Quinones didn't say what prompted Clark to shoot Wilson.
