Man killed in hit-and-run crash in Fort Lauderdale

Black BMW recovered in Sunrise, police say

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man was struck and killed Friday morning in a hit-and-run crash in Fort Lauderdale, authorities said.

The crash happened about 5:30 a.m. near the 1400 block of West Broward Boulevard.

Fort Lauderdale police said Sunrise police recovered a dark blue BMW 7 Series in the 2500 block of Northwest 89th Avenue.

Jamel Moreno told Local 10 News that he woke up to the trashed BMW parked in his yard.

"The windshield was broken. The rear window was broken. He has a dent on the front," Moreno said.

While police said the owner of the vehicle is cooperating, a witness said they had a lot of questions for the man, who appeared to be disoriented.

"They had taken him out and were asking him questions and stuff like that. One of the officers said there was blood on him," Raul Zacarias said. "It was one of these where you just knew. He was still even woozy. He was still even a little wobbly."

Fort Lauderdale police Detective Keven Dupree said two people were in the car at the time of the crash, and said that detectives are investigating whether alcohol or controlled substances played a role in the crash.

Julie Pratt, who witnessed the crash, told Local 10 News that the man who was struck is homeless.

She said she was crossing Broward Boulevard when she heard a commotion behind her.

"I was like, what in the world? And I looked back, and there it was. And there was a car proceeding, going straight on through," Pratt said.

Pratt said the victim was dragged for about a block.

"His shoes (were) on one side of the street, down one end of the road, and his body was driven all the way up to this side of 15th Avenue," she said.

Dupree said the driver fled west on Broward Boulevard.

People who knew the victim said he was in his 70s and would often sleep at the Salvation Army that was nearby.

"The staff and residents of The Salvation Army are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic accident this morning that involved one of our clients," Alyse Gossman, director of development for The Salvation Army of Broward County, said. "He was a gentle man that was trying his best to get back on his feet and become independent. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will truly be missed."

Westbound lanes of Broward Boulevard were shut down during the investigation. The lanes have since reopened.

Dupree said the victim's name has not been released as authorities are working to notify his family.
