PLANTATION, Fla. – A South Florida was charged with fatally stabbing the father of her ex-girlfriend's children on Thursday.

According to police, officers responded to reports of a stabbing at 4324 SW 6th St. #104.

Investigators says that 31-year-old Michael Dennis Backman and his ex-girlfriend, Sherease Williams, had arranged to meet at her apartment so that Backman could pick a television and stool left behind after the break-up.

At around 8:30 p.m. Backman was at the apartment waiting for Williams when she arrived with her two children and the children's father, John Travis Williams Jr.

After retrieving his personal belongings, Backman pulled out a knife and began to aggressively slash the cushion on top of the stool, police said.

That led to a fight between Backman and the children's father. During the fight, the 33-year-old victim was stabbed in the chest, and the suspect fled the area on his bicycle.

John Travis Williams died at the scene.

Backman was later located hiding under a trailer home and arrested. He was charged with Second Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery, and Resisting Arrest.
