Police monitor Taravella High School after incidents

School disrupted by 2 fires, pulled fire alarm

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. ā€“ Coral Springs Police Department increased its presence around Taravella High School on Wednesday following multiple incidents at the school this week.

Two intentionally set fires within the school and a pulled fire alarm forced evacuations on Monday and Tuesday.

Police and fire departments responded to all three incidents.

Tuesday's fire was started in a locker room by a student who poured nail polish remover on the ground and lit the liquid on fire which resulted in three-foot high flames. After fleeing the campus, the student was later apprehended and arrested at his home in Margate.

The school estimates that the damage to the lockers was approximately $100.

In addition to the in-school incidents, two separate student altercations were reported during Tuesday's evacuations.

With the school operating on its normal schedule on Wednesday, at least a dozen police vehicles were spotted around campus and no further incidents were reported.

Broward County Public Schools spokeswoman Nadine Drew said the school system was pleased with the response of school officials during the week.

"School administrators reacted quickly following all protocol to ensure the safety of the students," Drew said in a statement.

Drew added that Coral Springs police were also monitoring rumors on several social media outlets that suggested possible incidents in the future.
