Police officers assaulted by man in Coral Gables

Suspect captured in nearby construction site

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Two police officers were assaulted in Coral Gables Friday morning, authorities said.

Police said the officers were responding to a location where a man wanted for aggravated stalking had shown up to his girlfriend's home.

Although the woman hung up after dialing 9-1-1, officers responded anyway.

When the officers showed up, the suspect slammed one officer to the ground and assaulted another officer, authorities said.

One of the police officers was identified as Kelly Denham, who is also a spokeswoman for the police department. Denham was on the road Friday training another officer when the incident happened.

"They reacted exactly how I would want them to react," Coral Gables Police Chief Edward Hudak said.

Police said the suspect fled on foot into a nearby construction site after the alleged assault. Police set up a perimeter around the site.

After almost an hour, the suspect was discovered hiding in the wall of a third-floor unit by K-9 officers and taken into custody.
