Man killed after shootout with Miramar police

MIRAMAR, Fla. ā€“ Miramar police officers fatally shot a man wanted for a carjacking in Pembroke Pines late Tuesday.

The carjacking happened in the 1400 block of Southwest 97th Avenue about 10:40 p.m. Four people were inside the Honda when the suspect took it at gunpoint.

Police released a "be on the lookout" and Miramar officers found the car about 25 minutes later in a neighborhood near Pembroke Road and Palm Avenue.

"Our officers did fire," said Tania Rues with the Miramar Police Department. "I can't speculate as -- it wouldn't be prudent for me to speculate as to who fired first or anything of that nature. What we do know is our officers did fire and the occupant in that vehicle did have a firearm -- the firearm was located in that vehicle."

The gunshots startled neighbors.

"I have learned that when police are shooting to stay out of it," said one man.

Police identified the carjacking suspect as 28-year-old Jean Printemps.
