Police: Woman killed in front of granddaughter

Yudenia Rodriguez charged with second-degree murder

MIAMI – Police arrested a woman accused of stabbing her mother to death in front of the victim's 15-year-old granddaughter.

Police charged 40-year-old Yudenia Rodriguez with second-degree murder, child abuse with no great bodily harm, and victim tampering in a capital felony.

In Miami-Dade Circuit court Monday, Rodriguez complained to Judge Ellen Sue Venzer about having her hands cuffed behind her back.

"It hurts," she said.

Rodriguez stabbed her mother, Sonia Santiesteban, following an argument because her mother wanted her to move out, according to an arrest affidavit. Rodriguez lived with Santiesteban and three children.

Santiesteban's 15-year-old granddaughter began calling 911, but Rodriguez slapped her several times and took the phone away from her, police said.

Rodriguez appeared to fall asleep as Venzer, who ruled Rodriguez needed a psychological evaluation, read the charges against her.

In 2012, El Nuevo Herald profiled Santiesteban after she adopted three children. Family members are caring for Santiesteban's other children.
