Team Obama and Team Romney are at odds this morning over a new report saying Mitt Romney remained the CEO of Bain Capital longer than he claims.
Tory Dunnan has more on how both sides are responding.
--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --
IT ALL STARTED WITH AN ARTICLE IN THE BOSTON GLOBE.
THE REPORT QUESTIONS WHEN MITT ROMNEY LEFT HIS POSITION AS HEAD OF BAIN CAPITAL.
THE BACK AND FORTHS HAVE BEEN FLYING EVER SINCE THE STORY HIT THE STANDS.
THE BOSTON GLOBE CITES S-E-C DOCUMENTS THAT STATE ROMNEY OWNED 100% OF BAIN CAPITAL UNTIL AS LATE AS 2002.
BUT ROMNEY MAINTAINS HE LEFT BAIN IN 1999.
IF ROMNEY WAS THERE DURING THE THREE-YEAR PERIOD FOLLOWING THAT, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN CORPORATE DECISIONS THAT LED TO LOST JOBS.
THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN SAYS THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY.
Either Mitt Romney through his own words and his own signature was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the S-E-C which is a felony or he was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the American people to avoid responsibility for some of the consequences of his investments.
ROMNEY'S TEAM QUICKLY RESPONDED, SAYING ROMNEY DID IN FACT LEAVE IN 1999 TO RUN THE WINTER OLYMPICS -
THAT A QUIRK IN THE LAW KEPT HIS NAME ON THE PAPERWORK.
ROMNEY'S CAMPAIGN PUT OUT A SCATHING STATEMENT THAT SAYS IN PART:
"PRESIDENT OBAMA'S CAMPAIGN HIT A NEW LOW TODAY WHEN ONE OF ITS SENIOR ADVISERS MADE A RECKLESS AND UNSUBSTANTIATED CHARGE TO REPORTERS ABOUT MITT ROMNEY THAT WAS SO OVER THE TOP THAT IT CALLS INTO QUESTION THE INTEGRITY OF THEIR ENTIRE CAMPAIGN"
--REPORTER ON CAM TAG --
FORTUNE MAGAZINE REPORTED THURSDAY THAT CONFIDENTIAL COMPANY DOCUMENTS SUPPORT ROMNEY'S VERSION OF WHEN HE LEFT BAIN.
ROMNEY'S RECORD AT BAIN IS AN ISSUE THAT'S HAD SURPRISING STAYING POWER.
WE'LL SEE HOW THE STORY PLAYS OUT IN THE COMING WEEKS.
IN WASHINGTON, I'M TORY DUNNAN, BACK TO YOU.
