MIAMI – Democrat Annette Taddeo and Republican Jose Felix Diaz will meet in a special election to replace a Florida legislator who resigned after using a racial slur and vulgar language in a conversation with two black colleagues.
Taddeo and Diaz won Tuesday's special primary election for the District 40 seat in Miami-Dade County. Taddeo beat Ana Rivas Logan in the Democratic race, while Diaz defeated former state legislator Alex Diaz de la Portilla and Miami attorney Lorenzo J. Palomares in the Republican race.

The District 40 seat was once held by former state Sen. Frank Artiles, who resigned in April, four days after he used the slur and vulgarities at a private club near the state Capitol. He later apologized on the state Senate floor.
Diaz is an attorney who once competed on the reality show hosted by now-President Donald Trump.
Taddeo was former Gov. Charlie Crist's running mate when he unsuccessfully ran for governor as a Democrat in 2014.
Diaz stepped down from his seat as the District 116 representative in order to run for the state Senate.
Daniel Anthony Perez beat Jose Mallea in the Republican race to replace Diaz in the state House.
The winner of the Sept. 26 special election between Taddeo and Diaz goes to Tallahassee.
