PortMiami tunnel opening delayed at least 2 weeks

Project's contractor being fined $115,000 per day during delay

MIAMI ā€“ The opening of the new PortMiami tunnel will be delayed at least two weeks, despite an opening ceremony held earlier this month.

Construction on the tunnel connecting the MacArthur Causeway to Dodge Island has been completed, but traffic won't be going through it until a certificate of occupancy for its operations control center and additional testing have been approved.

The tunnel project was four years in the making at a cost of nearly $1 billion. It was expected to open for traffic by the end of May.

In the meantime, the project's contractor is being fined $115,000 per day until it opens. The fines began May 19, the day of the tunnel's opening ceremony.
