MIAMI - The eagerly anticipated $1 billion PortMiami Tunnel could open within the next two weeks, according to Chris Hodgkins, vice president of the project.
Leaky pipes, malfunctioning fans and other issues have prevented to tunnel from opening -- something that will not happen until the tunnel is in perfect condition.
According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the contractor, Bouygues Civil Works Florida, is absorbing the $115,000 per day fine until the tunnel opens to traffic. However, FDOT said that's at no cost to the department or the taxpayers.
The tunnel was supposed to open in late May.
