Pranks cause massive damage at S. Fla. high school

$40,000 in damages estimated at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – A South Florida high school sustained serious damage after students engaged in pranks that included a food fight in the cafeteria.

Early damage estimates at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek have run as high as $40,000.

The day had started with a more mundane senior prank as senior students brought their dogs to school, but things quickly escalated.

A school employee reported that students glued door locks throughout the building and put dead fish in the vending machines.

Spray paint could also be seen on school windows.

Videos posted on Twitter later showed a food fight breaking out during lunch time and students running wild on campus.

Another video showed an impromptu dance party breaking out in one of the classrooms.

Students told Local 10 News that most of the pranks were harmless fun, but some pranks went a little too far.

"I mean, the fish and the spray paint and the locks were too much," student Andrea Rivas said.

Broward County Public Schools maintain things did not get out of hand at Monarch.

"The situation was brought under control quickly by school leadership," said Nadine Drew of Broward County Schools.  "Students determined to have been involved in the cafeteria incident will face appropriate school discipline."

A Broward Sheriff's Officer spokesperson said nothing "major" occurred at the school, claiming that only silly string and milk was thrown in the cafeteria.

"[The incidents were] very minor and no law enforcement was called." said BSO's Joy Oglesby who also reported the damage to be closer to $25,000.
