Principal struck by SUV to throw first pitch at Marlins game

Javier Perez injured while coaching son's T-ball team

MIAMI – South Dade Senior High School's principal will throw the first pitch Friday night at the Miami Marlins game, months after he was injured by a drunken driving suspect.

Javier Perez is expected to throw the ceremonial pitch at 7:10 p.m. as the Marlins take on the Atlanta Braves.

Perez underwent multiple surgeries and had to have both of his legs partially amputated after he was struck by a GMC Envoy April 26 while coaching his son's T-ball team.

The driver, Marilyn Aguilera, 51, is charged with driving under the influence and causing a crash that resulted in great bodily harm.

According to an arrest warrant, her blood-alcohol level was .227 percent, almost three times the legal limit, when she crashed into the principal at a West Kendall park.

Another man, Elias Espinoza, was also injured in the crash.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help Perez cover his medical costs. One South Florida family, the Miltons, is reportedly covering the costs of all changes and renovations that need to be made to the principal's home to accommodate his new adjustments and needs.
