Prom held for teen dying of cancer

Hospital hosts prom for 14-year-old Katelyn Norman

LAFOLLETTE, Tenn.Updated 1:48 PM: It was announced this afternoon that Katelyn Norman died this morning following her two year battle with cancer.

Prom season has yet to begin, but it may be impossible to top the celebration held in Tennessee this week.

Katelyn Norman, a 14-year-old suffering from cancer, made it known that her dream was to go to prom. When her condition prohibited her from travelling to a planned Tuesday event outside of the hospital, Norman's friends and family brought the prom to her hospital room.

Decorated with balloons and streamers, Norman's room was turned into party central, fulfilling one of the items on her bucket list. Katelyn was named the Prom Queen and presented with a corsage by her prom date, Jacob.

So many people came to celebrate with Katelyn that those who couldn't visit inside her room at East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville, TN held a candlelight vigil in her honor outside the facility.

The original plan was to hold a prom away from the hospital, but when Katelyn had trouble breathing the doctors advised her to stay. Despite her inability to attend the event, Katelyn said she wanted the prom to go on as planned. That's when her friends brought the prom to her.

Since being diagnosed two years ago with osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer, Norman has fought to beat the disease.
