HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -

A U.S. Southern commander detailed proper etiquette for displaying the American flag.

"It's a disgrace for us, it's a disgrace to our country, to our flag, what it stands for," said William Rick Johnson with U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

Johnson was referring to several tattered American flags across South Florida.

"It's every American's responsibility to make sure that that business or homeowner knows that their flag is tattered," said Johnson.

The U.S. Flag code details how an American flag should be displayed and disposed.

"In order to retire a flag properly, it has to be burned," said Johnson.
