Protesters to North Miami Beach police using mug shots for practice: 'We are not your targets'

North Miami Beach mayor calls practice 'offensive'

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – When Woody Deant learned snipers were using his mug shot for target practice, he was furious.

North Miami Beach police officers put a bullet through his forehead and a bullet through his eye, he told reporters, referring to a copy of his mug shot that was used for target practice.

"We are not your targets" was the slogan of protesters outside the 6 p.m. Tuesday council meeting.

"Clearly the use of mug shots for target practice is something that's offensive and really is unacceptable," North Miami Beach Mayor George Vallejo said Tuesday.

Vallejo said he planned to introduce an ordinance prohibiting police from using pictures of people for target practice. It passed.

His move comes after days of complaints and months of police departments being criticized nationwide for violence against black males.

North Miami Beach Police Chief Scott Dennis announced Monday that his department has stopped the practice of using mug shots for target practice.

Dennis attended Tuesday evening's meeting and heard from angry residents.

"Just a question: How does this feel?" asked one man, holding up a poster of Dennis' face riddled with bullet holes.

Dennis spoke to Local 10 News, apologizing to the family.

"I know how I would feel if this was my son or a family member," Dennis said. "I understand very much, and I'm very concerned about it."
