Publix warns customers of Facebook coupon scam

$100 off coupon began showing up on Facebook newsfeeds

MIAMI – Publix customers are facing the harsh reality that when something appears too good to be true, it probably is.

A coupon that promised Publix shoppers $100 off purchases of $120 or more began appearing in Facebook newsfeeds over the weekend.

The initial excitement immediately carried over into skepticism, and all for good reason.

The coupon wasn't real.

Sunday afternoon, Publix tweeted out a warning that the coupon was not valid and not accepted at any of their stores.

"This is not supported by Publix and this coupon is not valid at any of our locations," Publix spokesman Brian West said. "We recommend not participating in the promotion or providing your personal information."

The grocery chain with stores all over the southeast said it is looking into who set up the dummy coupon.
