Retrial of accused detective killer Andrew Rolle begins

New trial begins after mistrial declared in death of Detective James Walker

MIAMI – The retrial of a man accused in the shooting death of an off-duty Miami police detective began Friday.

Andrew Rolle shot and killed Detective James Walker in the detective's unmarked Ford Taurus on a street in North Miami Beach in 2008.

Rolle has said he acted in self-defense, not knowing Walker was a police officer when the detective pulled his gun out first.

Prosecutors believe Rolle mistook Walker's car for his getaway car.

Rolle's trial began in June, but a mistrial was declared.

Defense attorneys said they did not properly get to depose a witness, who is also an alleged co-conspirator in another trial involving Rolle, before he took the stand.

Attorneys for both sides made their opening statements Friday before jurors heard testimony from the first officer to arrive at the scene and a crime scene technician.

The retrial was expected to resume Monday.
