SUNRISE, Fla. – A woman shot during a road rage incident worries the person who pulled the trigger might kill someone if he does it again.
"This person needs to be off the streets," said Tonika Clark, who still has the two bullets in her body: one in her stomach and another lodged just below the surface in her chest.
On November 2 about 10:30 p.m., Clark was riding in the back seat of a white Dodge Journey that was traveling north on Florida's Turnpike when she was shot.
Not long after they passed through the Cypress Creek toll plaza, someone in a black Infiniti that followed them through the toll lanes opened fire.
"It sounded like the tires blew. It was like 'boom, boom,' and I didn't realize at first that I was shot," Clark told reporters Monday morning. "After a few seconds, my whole body just got hot and I knew at that moment I was shot."
Surveillance cameras at the toll plaza captured a image of the vehicle. Clark and the people she was traveling with thought their friends were in that car, so they slowed down. It appears the driver took exception to that, sped up, started brake checking the white SUV and then opened fire when they tried to pass.
Troopers also want to find a black Dodge Challenger that was behind the Infiniti in the toll plaza. They think that driver may have seen something that could help identify the shooter that nearly left two small children without their mother.
"No one wakes up in the morning and have an idea that you could just be driving down the street, minding their own business, that you could lose your life," Clark said.
