Florida teen jumps out of car driven by friend's drunk mom, police say

Woman has prior DUI convictions

Sherri Crane

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – A woman forced her teenage daughter out of the front seat then drove her vehicle drunk, scaring her daughter's friend to the point that she jumped out of the vehicle, according to the Flagler Beach Police Department.

Sherri Crane, 44, was in her 2013 BMW around 11 p.m. Tuesday with her 15-year-old daughter and the girl's 15-year-old friend. Crane's daughter was driving but then Crane told the girl to stop on the side of the A1A to get in the backseat so she could drive, police said.

Crane then turned on North 8th Street and a witness in a truck followed behind to see what was happening. While on North 8th Street near Daytona Avenue a 15-year-old girl jumped out of the vehicle, so a woman from the truck stopped to help her while her husband followed the BMW.

The teenage girl was crying hysterically and kept telling the woman, "My friend is still in the car," the arrest affidavit said.

While a police officer who had been patrolling nearby was talking to the girl and the witness, another 15-year-old girl came running up to them. That girl told the officer that she was supposed to be driving the BMW because her mother was drunk, but Crane made her get in the back seat, according to the report.

The daughter said her friend was so scared of Crane driving that she jumped out of the vehicle as it was coming to a stop, police said.

Crane was yelling for her daughter to come back to the BMW when an officer approached her and told her about the allegations, according to the affidavit.

Crane denied being intoxicated. Police said Crane claimed that she had five drinks, but later changed her answer to three drinks, the report said.

The police officer wrote in the report that Crane smelled like alcohol and had difficulty balancing and following directions during the field sobriety test. Crane's blood alcohol content was .196, which is more than twice the legal limit, according to the affidavit.

Crane was convicted of DUI in 1999 and again in 2007, police said.

She was charged with child neglect and DUI with prior convictions.
