BSO deputies search for migrants who jumped overboard

Men jump off cargo ship near Port Everglades

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff's Office is searching for five migrants who jumped overboard near John U. Lloyd Beach State Park.

Sky 10 was in the air as several deputies and a BSO helicopter were assisting in the search.

BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella said the men jumped off a cargo ship as it pulled into Port Everglades just before 3 p.m. and swam to shore.

Moschella said the men were last seen getting out of the water.

The ship originated from Haiti.

Nova Southeastern University's marine biology campus sent a mass email to all students and employees alerting them to the incident.

"I got class canceled tonight," student Christine Fitzpatrick told Local 10 News.

The U.S. Coast Guard is no longer assisting in the search because they believe all five men made it to shore.

Anyone with information on the migrants' whereabouts is asked to call the BSO.
