Several people sickened at Spirit Airlines Training Center

Authorities say pepper spray somehow discharged in room

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Several people complained about respiratory symptoms Friday at the Spirit Airlines Training Center near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, authorities said.

Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles told Local 10 News that authorities initially received a call about 11:30 a.m. about a woman who had passed out inside the Sheltair Fort Lauderdale building on the south end of the airport.

He said two people were taken to Broward Health Medical Center and six people were being evaluated at the airport.

According to Jachles, people said they started to feel sick after smelling fumes while in a second-floor room inside the building.

He said about 120 people were evacuated from the building.

Spirit Airlines spokesman Stephen Schuler said hazmat crews were not able to find anything hazardous inside the building. An airport representative confirmed that pepper spray somehow discharged inside the room, causing some people to feel ill.

The all clear was shortly given by fire rescue officials and people were allowed back inside the building.

The evacuation did not affect the regular terminals at the airport.
