Sewer main break in Fort Lauderdale leads to concerns for nearby waterways

Residents asked to avoid water-related activities

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A sewer main break in Fort Lauderdale led to concerns Thursday for nearby waterways.

Authorities said the break in the 42-inch sewer main caused heavy flooding on Bayview Drive across the street from the Galleria Mall.

"The smell was bothering me a lot," Ragene Grier who lives nearby said. "I couldn't breathe at first, but then I got used to it."

An advisory was issued asking people to avoid the area if possible.

Drivers were redirected on Bayview Drive to Northeast 11th Street.

"Well, it's hard enough right now with all of the construction. I can't imagine people coming out down A1A out to Sunrise Boulevard," Brian Roberts, who lives in the area, said.

Authorities urge the public to avoid water-related activities, including swimming and fishing, until the sewer main is fixed.

The cause of the sewer main break was not immediately known.
