Silver Bluff Elementary School honors teacher after 50 years of service

Claudia May Lewis to retire at end of school year

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The entire student body of Silver Bluff Elementary School came together Friday morning to honor Claudia May Lewis, who has been a second-grade teacher at the school for 50 years.

Although her classroom now looks very different than it did back in 1965, her teaching philosophy is tried and true, and has transcended several generations.

"I believe in discipline, learning and love." Lewis said.

Her students have become like family to her, and throughout the years, even her own son was in one of her classes.

Holding back tears, Tyree Lewis said, "I'm so proud of her. It's rare to see a teacher teach for as long as she has."

The entire school showed their love and appreciation for Lewis as she prepares to retire at the end of this school year.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho showed his admiration for Lewis as he presented her with flowers and a proclamation naming May 8th "Claude May Lewis Day."

Lewis said she will take some time off this summer to ease into retirement, but she will be back next school year as a substitute teacher and volunteer at Silver Bluff Elementary.
