At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport officials said there were 48 cancellations and 103 delays altogether.

"Department began distributing hundreds of bottles of free water to passengers stuck waiting for news about their flights," said Gregory Meyer, with the Broward County Aviation Department.

Travelers continued to face challenges throughout Monday as they tried to return home from holiday travel and cruises.

Meyer said Terminal 1 of FLL had been steadily busy while Terminals 2, 3 and 4 were unusually crowded due to the widespread flight delays and cancellations.

Conditions may improve or worsen depending on weather conditions in the Midwest and Northeast, officials said.
