Dwayne was found unresponsive by his grandmother May 16. According to a post on his family's GoFundMe page, Dwayne's older brother performed CPR until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Doctors told Dwayne's family that the teen went into cardiac arrest after contracting a viral infection. They also determined that Dwayne had the heart disease known as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

Dwayne suffered a large amount of swelling to his brain, but the family is hopeful that he will recover.
