South Florida airports say passengers getting through TSA at acceptable rate

Miami International Airport to add TSA agents in anticipation of summer travel

MIAMI ā€“ Long lines at TSA checkpoints continue to plague airports across the country, but South Florida's major airports say travelers are getting through security at an acceptable rate.

Local 10 News reporter Derek Shore spoke to passengers who fly out of Miami International Airport on a regular basis, who claim they have had to wait up to 40 minutes to get through security.

Still, TSA wait times at MIA and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport are significantly shorter than some other major airports in the U.S.

TSA officials say they have stricter security checks, more travelers and a shortage in TSA agents, which is causing the long wait times.

A MIA representative said TSA is adding more agents at the airport in anticipation of more travelers during the summer.

An FLL representative also said the airport has no ongoing issues with its security checkpoints.

Airport officials advise passengers to arrive two hours early to catch a domestic flight and three hours early for an international flight.
