South Florida French community shows support for slain Paris journalists

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – South Florida's French community, along with other locals affected by Wednesday's terrorist attacks in Paris, came together for a rally on Lincoln Road on Miami Beach.

The crowd joined thousands around the world who held rallies in show of support after a dozen people were killed in a brutal shooting spree.

"A friend of mine called me this morning from Paris and he let me know," said Rachie Zerouki, manager of La Sandwicherie. "He says that's sad because they don't understand why it happened."

Zerouki said his friends and family are still in Paris, where he was born and raised. He said they are saddened by what happened but also angered that the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, was brutally targeted.

"That's a good newspaper," he said. "Because they're funny, but they tell you the truth. That's a good newspaper and some people don't like truth."

Officials said two gunmen stormed the offices of Charlie Hebdo, which is known for publishing controversial cartoons. Some of its drawings are of the prophet Muhammad.

The two gunmen were heard shouting "God is great" and "We have avenged the prophet Muhammad."

Officials said the pair went to the third-floor editorial offices, where they shot and killed journalists and security.
