MIAMI – One of the paint horses rescued from a stable in Miami Gardens where they had no food or water suffered from colic because of an intestinal blockage.
Susie, a 4-year-old mare, was placed on IV fluids and medications late Monday, according to the South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SFSPCA).
Veterinarians believe Susie suffered from colic because she ate sand, wood, and her own manure while she was trapped inside the stable. SFSPCA officials rescued her and Justice, a 10-year-old gelding, on Sunday and moved them to a ranch in southwest Miami-Dade County.
Veterinarian Dr. Zachary Franklin said Susie appeared to be better Tuesday morning.
"We will continue to fight for Susie's life for as long as she has the will to live and the spirit that she continues to show," said Jeanette Jordan, president/executive director of South Florida SPCA.
Eugene Mori, who owns the property where the horses were found, wasn't available for comment Tuesday. Neighbors at his apartment complex said he was in Europe.
At least one person said a man cared for the horses previously.
