The executive director of the state agency overseeing water supply, flood control and Everglades restoration between Orlando and Key West has resigned.
Melissa Meeker sent an email Tuesday to the secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, the director of strategic planning in the governor's office and South Florida Water Management District staff saying she had given her notice of resignation to the new chairman of the district's board.
Meeker was named executive director in 2011 and tasked with paring down the agency.
Meeker wrote to board chairman Daniel O'Keefe that her tenure saw "both formidable challenges and innovative solutions."
In her email to district staff, Meeker said she was proud of how they "rallied in the face of adversity, focused on solutions and refused to yield to cynicism."
