A Local 10 investigation prompted by a viewer's video of speeding school buses has led to an investigation by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
The video, which was recorded by a Local 10 viewer with the help of a passenger, shows three school buses with children on board speeding along a residential section of Alton Road in Miami Beach, where the speed limit is 30 mph. It also shows the buses passing traffic in the right lane, which is a moving violation.
Residents who spoke to Local 10 said speeding school buses are a regular occurrence in their neighborhood. They said it's hard to slow down and pull into their driveways with a big yellow bus fast approaching.
So Local 10 investigative reporter Jeff Weinsier spent one day a week for one month using a radar gun to find out how fast school buses in the neighborhood were traveling. He clocked buses traveling 41, 42 and even 43 mph over the posted speed limit.
The driver of one bus Weinsier clocked traveling 12 mph over the posted speed limit refused to speak to Local 10.
Dr. Marcos Moran, assistant superintendent of school operations, said the district is addressing the issue.
"As a result of you bringing this to our attention, we have already put out a memo with a reminder to our drivers, including the specific sections of their safe driver manuals," Moran told Local 10.
Moran said the public often reports school bus issues to the district.
"We do address every single concern individually and disciplinary action is issued depending on the severity," Moran said.
He said driver training is also an annual requirement.
"We do appreciate the concern and the public can rest assured that we will take the necessary steps to make sure our students are safe," Moran said.
Moran said the district has an outstanding road record -- about 1,100 different routes and 60,000 students transported twice a day -- with no major accidents to report.
