POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -

After a nearly six hour standoff, a gunman surrendered to police at a townhouse complex in Pompano Beach Sunday.

Broward Sheriff's Office evacuated an area at 1011 South Riverside, as the SWAT team, bomb squad and other tactical units were at the scene. The gunman became a threat about 3:48 a.m., and there was a lot of uncertainty.

The incident ended peacefully, after he turned himself in about 9:30 a.m., police said.

"He was taken into custody after talking with his sister," Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.

WPLG-Local 10's Tamika Bickham talked to the man's sister, who did not want to be identified, but said her brother was having an "episode." Family hugged and kissed him before he was taken into custody.

"We did find fire arms and ammunition inside the house, so the investigation is ongoing," Moschella said.

Police took the unidentified man to Imperial Point Hospital, where he was being evaluated under Baker Act.  No one was injured during the standoff.
