Super Bowl L host committee adds big names

Bob Griese, Dan Marino, Jason Taylor named co-chairs of South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee

MIAMI – Three of the biggest names in Miami Dolphins history are making a push to bring Super Bowl L to South Florida.

Dan Marino, Bob Griese, and Jason Taylor were named honorary co-chairs of the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee on Tuesday.

"If you look at people from around the world, they're going to want to come to Miami Beach, they want to come to Miami, they want the restaurants, that's for sure," said Marino.

South Florida is competing against San Francisco for Super Bowl L in 2016.

"I think it shows a commitment on our behalf -- being behind the organization, behind the City of Miami, or South Florida in general to try to secure the game," said Taylor.

San Francisco is building a new stadium that will be ready for 2016. There are plans to renovate Sun Life Stadium, but the bid was submitted with Sun Life Stadium "as is."

"We recognize that we have to do something different than what we've done in the past, and it's really, really a marketing package," said Rodney Barreto with the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee.

NFL owners will decide which stadium will host Super Bowl L during a meeting next May. The NFL requires host cities to have what it calls an "urban core," which would serve as a focal point for all Super Bowl-related activities.

"We've asked both Dade and Broward to present our committee the best they have to offer so that we can look at the different scenarios," said Barreto.

South Florida has hosted 10 Super Bowls, more than any other city, and Super Bowl L coincides with the Dolphins 50th anniversary.

"I only hold one Super Bowl record -- it's the longest sack in Super Bowl history," said Griese.

The loser of the Super Bowl L bid will compete against Houston for Super Bowl LI in 2017.
