Suspect dies in crash after police pursuit

Pregnant woman hurt in earlier altercation

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A suspect is dead after a police pursuit in Coral Springs.

Coral Springs police were called to the 2600 block of Riverside Drive on Tuesday night.

Police said Joel Matis, 36, of Coral Springs, was fighting with two other men.

During the altercation, Matias pushed a pregnant woman to the ground, injuring her, police said.

Matias drove off in a car before officers arrived.

Police spotted his car traveling east on Sample Road.

They attempted to pull him over,  but Matias sped off.

Officers lost sight of him near Rock Island Road and Sample Road.

When they approached Turtle Run Boulevard, they found the vehicle off the road in a grassy area against a tree.

Matias was taken to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead.

The pregnant woman was taken to Broward Health Coral Springs.
