Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said Anthon Adams was standing outside his mother's home in North Lauderdale watching his daughters play with his nephew when Jolly and a group of men got into an altercation with Adams' brother.

Adams was trying to stop the fight and get the children out of harm's way when Jolly pulled out a gun and shot him three times, deputies said.

Adams, an active duty member of the U.S. Navy stationed in Georgia, remains hospitalized.

Detectives said Simmons is a career criminal who has been arrested in Broward County nine times since 2007 on charges including battery, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, grand theft and resisting arrest. He had just recently been released from jail prior to the shooting.
