LAUDERHILL, Fla. – A 50-year-old woman was arrested after deputies say she struck a pedestrian with her pickup truck early Monday morning.
Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said Betty Greene, 68, was walking down the sidewalk along Northwest 24th Court in Lauderhill when she was struck. Witnesses helped her while she was pinned underneath the truck.
Deputies said the driver, Ivanka Cancic, fled the scene.
Cancic's truck then hit a nearby fire hydrant. Flooding from the broken hydrant caused severe flooding in the intersection of Northwest 22nd Street and 41st Avenue.
A large hole opened up, submerging about half of an SUV that was parked in the area.
Diane Duchesne told Local 10 News she woke up to find her Subaru Outback underwater and in the hole.
"I couldn't believe it," she said. "I said 'Oh my God, how am I ever going to drive it out there?'"
Police say that after the truck hit the fire hydrant, the cement gave way and Duchesne's Subaru caved in.
"We checked the vehicle to make sure it wasn't involved in the accident," said Capt. Jerry Gonzalez. "It was just parked there. Nobody there at the time."
Police caught up with Cancic shortly after the second accident and said officers found a bottle of tequila in her truck. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Greene was taken to the hospital and has since checked herself out. Her family says she is back home, although she is still in a lot of pain.
"We just feel blessed that she's still here with us, because it could've been worse, but we just thank God that it's not," said her daughter, Sekennia Greene.
