LAUDERHILL, Fla. – A store clerk at the Swap Shop in Lauderhill is speaking about a horrific attack that left him seriously injured by a samurai sword.
"How he was hitting me, it mean he want to kill me," Paramjit Singh said.
Singh's back is bruised, but his arm took the brunt of the beating Sunday as he tried to protect his face.
"You thought you were going die?" Local 10 News reporter Derek Shore asked.
"Yes, of course, because when he (was) hitting me, I (was thinking), 'OK, that's it for me. I think he's going to kill me," Singh said.
Singh said he was working at the Swap Shop at 3291 W. Sunrise Blvd. Sunday morning, as he has for 10 years.
He said he saw Jovaughn Walker, 21, grab the medieval weapon and lock his sights on Singh.
"He just jumped and (took) out the sword and remove from the cover," Singh said. "When he remove the cover, then he come to me."
Singh tried to run away but was slammed to the ground.
Police said Walker beat another man, Douglas Brochet, 81, with a metal shelving pipe at a nearby Shell service station just before the attack on Singh.
Brochet, who spoke to Shore on Tuesday, said he suffered bruises and received 18 stitches.
Singh had surgery on his arm and said some nerves were severed. He said he still cannot feel two of his fingers, but he is incredibly grateful to have survived.
"He had no reason?" Shore asked.
"No reason. His reason is to kill someone. That's his reason," Singh said. "It means I'm lucky to (be) alive."
Walker faces charges of aggravated battery and attempted murder.
