An 82-year-old bicyclist is dead after being struck by a van Monday morning in Tamarac, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
Tamarac Fire Rescue treated Oscar G. Aleman, 82, around 8:30 a.m. Monday at the scene of the crash, at McNab Road and Northwest 70 Avenue.
Deputies said Aleman was riding his bicycle southbound across McNab Road when he was hit by a 2004 Chevrolet Express driven by 45-year-old Serge Gharakhanian, of Coral Springs. Gharakhanian had been eastbound on McNab Road.
Eric Balaban saw the crash scene as he was making his way to work at Tubby's Liquors in Tamarac.
"(He) probably just wanted to take a ride for the beautiful day," said Balaban. "He was crossing McNab and the guy in the minivan was on McNab. It's a bad corner; more than one person has been hit here."
Aleman was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to BSO.
"There was a lot of people that really tried to help him out," said Balaban. "It was blatantly apparent with the helicopter that it was probably not going to be a good day for him."
The crash was so intense it crumbled the van's front hood.
"The guy that hit him was trembling. He was sitting out on the corner and he was a mess," Balaban said. "He felt really guilty. He wasn't doing good. He was physically trembling. He was shaking like a leaf."
The crash is still under investigation, said BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella.
Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Detective Michael Kelliher at 954-321-4840 or report anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
