MIAMI – Taxi drivers on Monday protested several proposed ordinances in Miami-Dade County, including some that require credit card machines in every cab.
In July, a Local 10 investigation found taxi drivers often overcharged customers who wanted to use credit cards.
County officials want to regulate what banks the drivers use. The drivers said it would cost them money.
"The credit card issue is good, but we have to do it by our bank," said Jean L'amour. "We pay 10 percent and it's not good for the driver."
Other proposals include restricting drivers who get two tickets a year, mandating that cars be fewer than six years old, and requiring Sun Passes in all cabs.
"Our aim is simple: to bring our local taxi industry into the 21st Century," Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said in a statement.
"They need to include drivers in these talks," countered L'amour.
Those proposals go before the Miami-Dade Commission at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
