Teen girl injured by firework in Deerfield Beach

14-year-old suffers 'significant' injury after finding firework in trash pile

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 14-year-old girl is in a Fort Lauderdale hospital after she was injured by a firework.

Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said the teenager suffered burns Monday in Deerfield Beach when another child found the firework in a trash pile and handed it to her. The firework exploded while she was holding it.

Jachles said the girl suffered a "significant" injury to her left hand, as well as burns and abrasions to her face.

The incident is the latest in a series of fireworks mishaps in South Florida on or in the days after Fourth of July.

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul injured his hand while attempting to light fireworks in his Coral Springs neighborhood.

A 24-year-old Margate man lost his hand while setting off fireworks in Dania Beach.

Another man lost several fingers in a separate incident.

The girl hurt in the most recent incident was taken to Broward Health Medical Center. She is expected to recover.

"At this point, it appears that the teen is very lucky," Jachles said.
